Bay Village is the smallest neighborhood of Boston with a population of less than 1,500. A quaint, village like setting that is a collection of gas lit one way streets and small brick rowhouses uniquely positioned between the South End, Back Bay and Theater District.
Often mistaken for Back Bay or the South End, Bay Village actually plays a large role in Boston’s history. Given the close proximity to Boston’s Theater District, it was actually the birthplace for American writer Edgar Allen Poe. His parents were actors in the theater district and had lived in the neighborhood. It was also home the infamous Cocoanut Grove fire of 1942. This nightclub had a tragic fire that cost 492 lives on November 28, 1942 and had changed fire code enforcement across the United States as a result. A memorial plaque has been installed in the area as a tribute to the lives that were lost that evening.
Today Bay Village is a prime option for urban dwellers looking for a quiet, pedestrian friendly neighborhood with close proximity to all that Boston has to offer.
